Royal engagement: Prince William & Kate Middleton are engaged

Prince William has announced that he is engaged to marry his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton, telling UK media that they were were both "very, very happy"

The couple became engaged whilst on safari in Kenya last month. Prince William presented Ms Middleton with his mother's original engagement ring - a large oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds, saying he wanted her memory to be a part of this special occasion "This was my way of making sure that my mother didn’t miss out on today,"

Kate looked stunning at the press announcement, wearing a midnight blue satin dress. The prince wore a dark blue suit.

With plans to marry in the British spring or summer of 2011, Kate said that joining the family was a "daunting prospect", but that she was looking forward to it.

Congratulations have poured in from public figures around the world including the Queen, British Prime Minister David Cameron and talk-show guru Oprah.

Magazine sales are set to rise as people are caught up in the glamour of plans and preparations for a royal wedding. The Australian Women's Weekly is scrabbling to find a way of including the royal engagement in their December issue which is in the middle of being printed.

The wedding is likely to boost foreign visitors to England, with VisitBritain chief executive of Sandie Dawe, saying the wedding would be "an enormous boost for the British tourism industry".

When will same-sex marriage be made legal in Australia?

Same-sex marriage will soon be legal in Australia Australian Parliament is currently debating changes to the Marriage Act 1961,  which would allow same-sex couples to marry in Australia 2018. This follows a resounding 'yes' vote in the 2017 plebiscite on Marriage Equality. The contentious postal vote revealed that 61.6% of Australians believe same-sex marriage should be legalised. Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has pledged that parliament will vote on the issue of marriage equality before Christmas. Changes to the Marriage Act 1961 will need to be passed in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
